The Media Council is a group of responsible media organisations and public-spirited individuals whose role overall is to promote and encourage quality journalism.
Of the current 18 members, nine are media companies and nine are private individuals. All members have equal voting rights.
The Council has the respect and support of every major media organisation in Fiji and enjoys close links with media associations around the Pacific. It plays a particularly prominent role in safeguarding the freedom of the press and broadcast media. The Fijian public has a right to accurate information and fair reporting, and the Council champions that right.
In the main, its activities are funded by the local media industry itself, supplemented where necessary by assistance from other sources. The objectives of the council are:
- To promote high journalistic standards
- To enhance the media's image
- To safeguard the media's independence
- To uphold freedom of speech and expression
- To uphold the public's right to be informed accurately and fairly
- To promote an independent and effective Complaints Committee
The Council has published a General Media Code of Ethics and Practice. The Code sets out guidelines that every major publisher and broadcaster in Fiji has agreed to abide by. The Media Council's General Media Code of Ethics and Practice will fulfill an important role in raising journalistic standards, and every working journalist in Fiji has been provided with a copy.
