Apple used the World Wide Developers Conference to announce new tools that could have major impacts on the creation and flow of news and new business models for journalism. Today’s announcement suggests that Apple’s new Mission Control, iCloud, and the iOS integration of Twitter offers many interesting opportunities for the media industry and the communities it serves.

The iCloud offers to lead many people, including journalists, to cloud-based services. Apple has a good selection of core and media apps to be integrated into the new service. The forthcoming Lion OS, Apple seems to be applying lessons learned from iOS, such as multi-touch gestures and embedding into the Mac OS, which has interesting implications for interaction design and journalism information design.

In three years, Apple’s app store had more than 14 billion downloaded mobile applications. This underscores the timeliness and impact of initiatives like RJI’s partnering journalism with computer science are more urgent than ever. With more than 3,000 new OSX APIs and over 1,500 new iOS APIs, even more exciting opportunities are ahead for reimagining news production and consumption.
