Another app the Mobile Reporting Team choose to test during International Night was the shoot and share photo app, Instagram.

Instagram pioneered the photo-sharing space on mobile devices and continues to develop their application to reach a wider and more universal audience. Instead of just taking photos, adding cool vintage effects and sharing them with trendsetters around the world, Users can now interact in a variety of ways with the photography meets social media applications. While Instagram has many features that may not be ideal for journalistic purposes, many of the options it does offer are great for mobile journalists. The user interface is clean and simple to comprehend. The newest update for the applications gives users the ability to see some of the most popular photos, connect with other users on a News screen and of course share images across a variety of platforms. Instagram has grown considerably since its initial launch and now has a more social media feel that lets users interact in different ways. Users can “Like” and “Comment” on photos posted by themselves or their friends.

After taking a photo on the app or uploading one from you device’s library you are then given the option of adding up to 15 different effects. These effects range from Gotham, 1977 and Nashville to Hefe. While the effects may not be the most desirable or professional thing a journalist can add to their work, the share function that comes next can be extremely useful. After adding or not adding an effect the user can then upload their image to Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, Flickr or a variety of other mediums. This instant upload option is what makes Instagram an easy shortcut for mobile journalists looking to get content up and out to their audiences quickly. When used at International Night the Instagram application on the iPhone 4 worked without a flaw. The images were captured quickly and easily, a simple effect was given to the image and the picture was up on my twitter feed in under 2 minutes.

The primary function of Instagram is quick and easy photo sharing with a touch of hipster flair.
