On the Haaretz.com website, Eytan Avriel reported:

New York Times Company Chairman Arthur Sulzberger believes newspapers must transition into the digital era...and Sulzberger and the Times are focusing on how to best manage the transition from print to Internet.

Sulzberger claimed newspaper companies can make about the same revenue online because of the lower cost of online editions compared to print. He discussed Times Reader, a new software program which may offer a near-print reading experience on mobile devices and laptops:

"These costs aren't anywhere near what print costs," Sulzberger says. "The last time we made a major investment in print, it cost no less than $1 billion. Site development costs don't grow to that magnitude...

"I very much believe that the experience of reading a paper can be transferred to these new devices."

What does that mean for the Times' print edition? "I really don't know whether we'll be printing the Times in five years, and you know what? I don't care either," Sulzberger says.
