Digital Publishing Alliance
Mission
The Digital Publishing Alliance is a member-supported initiative of the Reynolds Journalism Institute. Its mission is to bring together leaders and innovators from forward-thinking organizations as well as technology experts, scholars, researchers and consultants to pursue new digital publishing strategies, products and business models that can be put to immediate, practical use.
Strategies
- Initiate projects that enhance the value and revenue potential of current and future digital publishing products or services.
- Serve as a clearinghouse for information about digital publishing technologies and best practices.
- Leverage the market power of members to influence vendors and developers.
- Provide training and support that allow members to take full advantage of new technologies.
- Regularly exchange information about projects, priorities, possibilities, successes and failures.
- Test and evaluate digital publishing products, strategies and business models.
- Test and evaluate mobile reading devices.
Alliance working groups
Members recommend projects and form working groups to pursue those projects. Each working group consists of individuals who are likely to be involved in the adoption of resulting strategies, products or business models

What is digital publishing?
In its broadest definition, digital publishing is the production and distribution of digital content. This can involve everything from cell phone alerts and blogs to print-on-demand and eBooks.
The forms of digital publishing can be grouped into two main categories — online and offline.
Online forms require a continuous connection to a communication network, usually the Internet, to be accessed and displayed. The dominant online digital publishing medium today is the Web.
Offline forms can be accessed and displayed without a continuous connection to a communication network. They are usually downloaded from a network or distributed on portable storage media, such as CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives and memory sticks. The dominant medium for offline forms that consist predominantly of textual content is Portable Document Format (PDF).
In some publishing applications, digital content can be accessed and displayed online or offline.
On which forms of digital publishing will the DPA focus its attention?
To avoid duplicating the efforts of other organizations that have focused attention on the Web, the DPA will, at least initially, focus its attention on the forms of digital publishing that are meant primarily for reading publications offline on eReaders and other mobile reading devices.
