Going Mobile: How Newspapers Can Meet the Cell Phone Challenge
Clyde Bentley, left, speaks during the "Going Mobile" conference at the Reynolds Journalism Institute.
Editors, consultants and mobile phone experts from across the United States gathered at RJI April 19-20 to ponder how the newspaper industry can benefit from the phenomenal boom in mobile technology. Gartner Research recently estimated that by 2013, more people will log onto the Web using a mobile phone than those using a PC. That gives newspapers less than three years to replicate or replace the online delivery system upon which much of its future is based.
Clyde Bentley, a 2009-2010 Reynolds Fellow and University of Missouri associate professor, organized a set of key speakers to ground participants in the background and potential of mobile journalism. He then led them in a half-day brainstorming session to dream of a mobile future for newspapers that is both popular with the public and profitable for news organizations.
