COLUMBIA, MO (February 12, 2012) – Craig F. Walker of The Denver Post achieved premier honors as the 2011 Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the 69th annual Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition on Saturday at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia.
Walker’s award-winning portfolio was chosen on Saturday night during the first four-day session of the three-week judging period, POYi director Rick Shaw said in a released statement. In honoring Walker’s portfolio, the judges noted a strong balance of powerful aesthetic with solid journalistic content that reflects news events and social issues. Walker’s portfolio presented a stunning project on Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), judges said.
Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in 2010 for his long-term documentary project "Ian Fisher: American Soldier." He has been a staff photographer at The Post since 1998, and is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Photography.
