NEW YORK, May 12, 2011—Hearst Corporation’s Innovation group, The University of Missouri’s Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), Adobe Systems Inc., Google, and Sprint today announced the winners of their student competition aimed at creating new media-related mobile apps using Google’s open-source Android mobile platform. The winning project, based on an idea submitted to Hearst Innovation by David Campbell of The National Magazine Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hearst based in the U.K., is a game that lets players build their own game-world digital publication by selecting from the day’s real-world breaking news, gaining “viewership” based on the popularity of the stories they select. It was created by Bryan Baugher, Amanda Klohmann, Josh Lory, Morgan Mitchell and Matthew Schmertz.
With mentorship from Hearst Corporate Innovation and employees across Hearst’s diverse businesses, the competition challenged journalism, business, and computer science students at the University of Missouri to collaborate on the development of potentially valuable mobile apps. Adobe offered the students software tools to assist with development, Sprint tested the apps during the development stage, and Google provided assistance with the Android operating system.
