David Cohn is known as a rock star in the journalism world of “new thinkers.” The 28-year-old recently moved from working in his San Francisco apartment to a swanky office in Columbia, Missouri’s Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI). He’s working as an RJI fellow to expand his website Spot.us. (When you talk about the site, you say “Spot-Us.”)
Cohn’s site roared into view when he won a Knight Foundation grant to fund his vision in 2008. Two years later, his vision is successful and growing. The site focuses on “community funded reporting.” The concept works when many people have the chance to contribute a little money towards a reporter’s story pitch. The money helps fund the reporter’s budget before he or she completes the story.
