This economy has been tough on businesses throughout the country and the newspaper industry has not been immune to those changes. It's been a difficult couple of years, but we've all adjusted accordingly and continue to move forward.
One thing we know is that newspapers continue to be a big part in the lives of local people. The Internet is certainly changing the way everyone operates their business and it has had an impact on our newspaper as well.
But, one thing that is emerging is that people more and more are learning that blogs and other sites on the Internet are not as reliable as you might think for news. Quite often they are opinions and sometimes not well researched.
Because of that and because smaller newspapers tend to use their resources for reporting very local news and other local information people want, that segment of the industry has done far better than the larger papers.
A recent survey by the National Newspaper Association had some real upbeat information on the success of smaller papers.
Here's some interesting facts found in that survey. Our circulation at the Daily Times is about 8,500 and that puts us right in the middle of the survey which showed 80 percent of America's newspapers have a circulation of 15,000 or less. We're one of 8,000 such newspapers in the country.
All totaled 86 million people read community newspapers every week. Sure, there are a lot of huge papers in the country, but it's the small community newspapers that are serving the markets like Watertown, and serving them well.
