The Missouri Method Meets the Mizzou Advantage

Dec. 4, 2009

By Rebecca Townsend

REDI conference

The Missouri Method is known for offering practical preparation for the professional world; students learn by doing. Inside Columbia Publisher Fred Parry said fostering ongoing connections between students and business may present benefits to both.

"If we can convince companies in Missouri to offer their businesses as laboratories I think there’s great opportunity there."

In an effort to build on both internal and regional strengths the University of Missouri outlined its Mizzou Advantage platform. Based on five interdisciplinary research areas involving health, sustainable energy, food, technological development and new media, the Advantage represents "areas where we’re positioned to compete with the very best and win," said Provost Brian Foster. Building awareness of these capabilities influences the ability to win grant money, participate in policymaking, attract the brightest faculty and students and bolster future career opportunities, he said.

"It's all about stature and impact; stature in higher education is everything…it determines what kind of impact we'll have in terms of economic development."
