For some months, and particularly since a cadre of interested folk convened (alas, without me) a couple of weeks ago at the University of Minnesota’s Journalism Center, there has been an on-going discussion about newsgames and the “gamification” of news, mostly on the Mediashift Idea Lab blog.

Imagine playing computer games while at work, with the full blessing of your boss. Sounds too good to be true? Not so.

This is where Serious Games – designed with the objective of solving a problem – come into play.

Dispatch from the Digital Frontier: Experience Matters

We make much of our experiences, because our experiences make us. I’m reminded of this every day at Mizzou School of Journalism as I watch student journalists live the “Missouri Method,” an immersive learning approach to journalism education.

For many of us, the end of the year is a time to take stock of one’s life. It’s also, for me, the time when I weed my drawers and files of unneeded contents. That job has gotten more complicated over the years, since so much of what I hold on to is in digital form.

Being an ambassador for the adoption of game-based communication requires persistence and thick skin. And creativity and fervor. And lots of patience.

When I arrived at RJI, I quickly realized that few of my colleagues – and surprisingly few of the students – admitted to being gamers. Indeed, and perhaps not surprisingly, the idea of melding online games with journalism was not especially appreciated by professional or student journalists. When I opened my presentation to a class I’d been asked to speak to with my customary question, “So, what games are you playing?” one student scoffed, “We’re journalism majors. We don’t have time to play games.” Tough crowd.

Isn’t it intriguing how the same good idea pops up at roughly the same time from a number of dissociated people in far-flung locations? I guess that’s how we collectively come to know that something is a good idea whose time has come.

Engagement is on many people’s minds (RJI Fellow Joy Mayer among them) these days. Again. Why? Because, the theory goes, if the [customer/reader/learner/voter/player] is engaged, then she will [buy more/read on/learn better/vote for me/keep playing]. Engagement is the first-level indicator of success, even though it’s not inherently measurable on its own.

Online games are more than a means for entertainment. Games tell stories. Games teach. Games engage. Games persuade. BUT….Can games tell the news? Can games teach journalism? Can games help with reporting? If you want to find out the answers to these interesting questions join Reynolds Fellow Anne Derryberry as she explores what games can contribute to journalism and how games can help teach students who want to better their journalism skills.

Dispatch from the digital frontier: Can games save journalism?

Reynolds fellows, Anne Derryberry, game salon, game and news

As an American, I have a deep appreciation for journalism and those who practice it. Journalism is fundamental to a successful democracy, and I expect there are many Americans who are grateful, as I am, for the hard work of the reporters who dog the events of our time so that they can shine the light on the inner workings of government and other institutions that affect how our society operates.
