RJI produces annual IPI Report

"Media and Money: Worldwide economic upheaval changes the shape of news," this year's annual IPI Report, brought together top journalists from around the world to address the international upheavals in economics and journalism. Edited, produced and published by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) for the International Press Institute, several industry leaders associated with RJI contributed to the work. The annual IPI Report was released Monday during the IPI World Congress in Taipei, co-edited by Marty Steffens, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) Endowed Chair in Business and Financial Journalism, and Randy Smith, Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism, both at the Missouri School of Journalism.

Other contributors to the Report from the Missouri School of Journalism and RJI include the Lee Hills Chair in Free Press Studies Amy McCombs, the Houston Harte Chair in Innovation Mike Jenner, 2010-2011 Reynolds Fellow David Cohn, recently retired and former Lee Hills Chair Stuart Loory, and Director of Pictures of the Year International (POYi) Rick Shaw.

Project on Mexico's drug violence selected for POYi Emerging Vision funding

Katie Orlinsky is the $10,000 recipient of the 2011 POYi Emerging Vision Incentive for her project proposal on the violent impact of Mexico's war against drug trafficking on women and families.

Orlinsky is a freelance photojournalist based in New York and is currently a fellow at the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University. Her project proposal included 20 "first take" photographs that look at the violence to families living in the border cities of Mexico, such as Ciudad Juarez.

International Women's Day

In honor of the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day Global Journalist invited the public to a live taping of its March 10 program.

The event, which was co-sponsored by Workforce of Women, took place in the Fred W. Smith Forum at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. A moderated conversation among in-studio panelists and call-in guests regarding the status of female journalists was be broadcasted live on KBIA, and a reception followed the event.

In North America, the threats to press freedom are subtle but are still present in court rulings, privacy law litigation and the absence of a federal shield law, according to participants in RJI’s first webinar, The Erosion of Free Press in North America. More than 100 people joined in the discussion, online as well as at RJI, that focused on the need for greater vigilance in support of press freedom.
