When we first began this project, we already knew that journalism was shifting in a new direction. Whether or not mobile journalism would play a large role was unknown. After our experiences this semester, we believe mobile journalism will be a part of the evolution of the industry.

MoJo: Issues with harsh lighting

By RJI on May 3, 2012 0 Comments Blogs

About a month ago I reported at a bike polo practice but the light, especially during the interview, wasn't the greatest. Because the majority of the practice takes place at night, lit only by street lamps, there was nothing to light the interviewee's face and I did not have an external light on me that day. I went back a few weeks later and I set up the light exactly as how the kit is set up to use the external light. Below is what I collected. The content of the video is irrelevant, we are just using it as a light test.

MoJo: The transition from traditional journalism to mobile reporting

By RJI on May 2, 2012 0 Comments Blogs

This week I covered the Pride Parade, held on campus April 25, 2012. Lots of signs, colorful clothing and chanting made for a good audio project—and audio was something I wanted to experience before the semester ends.

One problem I had is just a transition from regular equipment to the cell phone. It’s a completely different way of collecting material.

#RJInnovation (2012): Matching businesses to the most appropriate news products to improve results for both

By RJI on May 1, 2012 0 Comments Blogs

It’s long been assumed that men are more likely to deal with car problems and women with household operations. Thus you’ll see tire ads in the sports section and home care products advertised in feature sections or on TV dramas. Might a deeper analysis of the consumers that businesses want to reach matched appropriately to the growing variety of news and programming products offered by the media result in improved performance for both the businesses and the media?

#RJInnovation (2012): Is the culture of legacy news organizations hampering digital progress?

By RJI on April 27, 2012 0 Comments Blogs
RJInnovation Week

A recent study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism suggests that the news industry’s challenge in transitioning from print to digital is hampered by the culture within those organizations. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the comments collected in the research suggest that the most troublesome culture barrier comes not from the newsroom, but from other areas of the enterprise.

Mike Fancher, former editor of the Seattle Times and 2008-2009 RJI Fellow, moderated a town hall-like discussion of the issue, leading off with the Pew Research Center’s Mark Jurkowitz and Tom Rosenstiel. Tuesday’s RJI discussion centered around bridging the gap between traditional news and business methods and the revenue streams and news reporting of the future.

By RJI on April 24, 2012 0 Comments Blogs

Using the Vericorder technology and the mobile kit has been a gift for a number of reasons. Not having to juggle heavy, inconvenient equipment across Columbia has possibly been my favorite part of this capstone project. All the equipment I need can fit in my purse or a small bag.
