Smith was born in Arkoma, Oklahoma, on Jan. 1, 1934. He began his media career in 1951 as a classified advertising salesman for the Southwest Times Record in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Promotions began soon thereafter, and by 1966, he was serving in senior management positions for the entire group. He became CEO in 1990.

In his position as chairman of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, Smith’s generous support helped create the Reynolds Journalism Institute, at which the Fred W. Smith Forum was named in his honor.
