About Dale Musser

As chief technology adviser, Dale Musser is helping RJI navigate the technological challenges and opportunities facing the journalism industry. This includes mentoring RJI Fellows with the technology components of their projects, providing guidance to the RJI Executive Committee during the fellowship and project selection process, and helping lead the annual RJI Student Competition, which he’s been an active part of since 2008.

In addition to his role at RJI, Musser is an associate professional practice professor in convergence journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism, where he co-teaches a mobile application development class. He’s also an associate teaching professor in computer science in the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering.

Musser came to MU in 1994 to join the faculty of the College of Education, where he worked in the area of learning technologies and performance support systems and was co-founder and co-director of the Center for Technology Innovations in Education.

In 2008 he joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering where he served as director of the bachelor of science program in Information Technology for eight years. During this time, he increased enrollment from less than 100 students annually to more than 300 while also creating innovative educational programs such as the collaborative team-based course in mobile application development where students from journalism and engineering design and develop iOS applications.

Musser also worked as the manager of multimedia educational software products at IBM K-12.

He holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in instructional design and technology from The Ohio State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.

His interests and expertise include iOS application design and development; web application development; machine learning; software architecture and engineering; digital media production; game design and development; robotics; and information dissemination.
