About David Rees

David Rees is the interim director of Pictures of the Year International, the oldest and most prestigious visual journalism competition in the world. He is overseeing the program’s 75th contest, which will culminate in April 2018 with a retrospective exhibit at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Rees previously served as POYI director from 2000 to 2006.

He is also a professor and chair of the photojournalism faculty at the Missouri School of Journalism, where he has taught since 1986. He serves as co-director of the Missouri Photo Workshop and is director of the Angus and Betty McDougall Center for Photojournalism Studies, both headquartered at the School. MPW, the world’s oldest documentary photojournalism workshop, brings together working professionals and Missouri photojournalism students for a weeklong in-depth documentary project chronicling life in a small Missouri town.

Rees has led photography seminars in Korea and China, and study abroad programs in Mexico, Italy and England.

Before he began his career at the Missouri School of Journalism, he was a photographer and a photo and graphics editor at the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune.

Rees earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree in journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism.

David Rees is the interim director of Pictures of the Year International and the director of the Angus and Betty McDougall Center for Photojournalism Studies.
