About Mark Deuze
Mark Deuze is a professor of media studies, specializing in journalism at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Humanities. He worked at Indiana University’s Department of Telecommunications in Bloomington, from 2004 to 2013 where he shared responsibility for developing and teaching the media management graduate program. Before transitioning to academia, Deuze worked as a freelance reporter in the Netherlands and South Africa.
His published work includes more than 50 articles in academic journals and seven books, including “Media Work” (Polity Press, 2007) and “Media Life” (Polity Press, 2012). His work has been translated into Chinese, German, Portuguese, Greek, and Hungarian. In 2008 he received a Visiting Research Fellowship through the Center for International Communications Research of the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, and he was a visiting Fulbright Scholar from 2002 to 2003 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
His interest in entrepreneurial journalism stems from his overall focus on creativity as the driving force of those who make media. As a former journalist Deuze says he knows how important being happy and autonomous is to working in the creative sector.
When he’s not teaching and/or conducting research, Deuze plays bass guitar in the alternative rock/metal outfit Skinflower, takes many short walks with his Egyptian dog Jason, and lives in downtown Amsterdam where he is always thinking about what to grill next.
Mark Deuze is a professor of media studies at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and a 2015–2016 RJI Fellow.
