Graduate journalism and business students in the Entrepreneurship and Media of the Future class solve real business problems on behalf of clients that range from newly formed startups to legacy news organizations. This year’s student teams will present their solutions to their clients and a panel of judges at the Center for the Digital Globe Symposium. Join us for a morning of teamwork and bright ideas. The Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent, not-for-profit news cooperative headquartered in New York City. This team was tasked with exploring new revenue-generating opportunities for the AP’s data journalism talents, and after conducting market research, the team sees exciting potential for the AP in the lobbying and advocacy world. Team members are MBA candidates David Campos and Lycus Woo, and graduate journalism students Uliana Pavlova and Grigor Olegovich Atanesian. The team’s mentors are AP Director of Product Ken Romano and Randy Smith, the Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism.

The Columbia Missourian

MissourianThe Columbia Missourian is a community news organization managed by professional editors and staffed by Missouri School of Journalism students. This team designed a strategic plan to bring the Missourian out of a $300,000 budgetary shortfall and into a sustainable future. Team members are journalism graduate student Emily Rackers and MBA candidates Alexander Starkey and Shraddha Hegde. The team’s mentors are Missourian Interim Executive Editor Mike Jenner and Les Borgmeyer, local sales manager for Fox TV.

Burst

burstBurst technology helps media companies and brands collect user-generated content and integrate them into live streams. This startup aims to disrupt the social media landscape, giving its clients a way to engage their audiences and control the conversation. The team developed a set of strategies to maximize Burst's short-term success and long-term growth. Team members are journalism graduate student Meredith McGrath and MBA candidates Brian Throm, Erin Webb, Orvil Savery and Dakota Shanes. The team's mentors are Burst Marketing Associate Emma Locke and Les Borgmeyer, local sales manager for Fox TV.

Grafiti

grafitiGrafiti is a startup on a mission to democratize data. Its mobile product and upcoming web platform allow users to explore verified datasets, build and play with charts and then seamlessly share their creations. The team was tasked with identifying the next critical move for Grafiti to execute within the next few months, and with charting a course for productive long-term growth. Team members are journalism graduate students Michael Frieseke and Robert Jones, and MBA candidates Ryan Hogan and James Wilkinson. The team's mentors are Grafiti CEO Farhan Mustafa and Randy Smith, the Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism.
