Summer Collins is a former politico turned M.Ed. candidate in Counseling Psych is varied across disciplines including pathological factors of charitable giving amongst millennials, the efficacy of international financial tools in combatting terrorism, and mindfulness interventions for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
David Danto, Director of emerging technologies and 2016-2017 RJI Fellow
David Danto has over three decades of experience delivering successful business outcomes in media and collaboration technology for various firms in the corporate, broadcasting and academic worlds. This includes:
The building and managing of the world’s largest commercial Cisco Immersive TelePresence ecosystem at the time (other than within Cisco) for JP Morgan Chase.
The design, implementation and operation of global video and audio conferencing facilities, television and audio/visual facilities and digital signage solutions for Lehman Brothers.
The design of TV and radio facilities for Bloomberg, including the development of their revolutionary multi-screen TV format and the design and construction of studios for PBS’ The Charlie Rose Show.
The development of the Television and Media Services department for NYU, including the design and implementation of America’s first urban, self-contained, multi-building university cable TV system using microwave links to cross public rights of way.
The design, management and/or support of AV, collaboration, multimedia and/or TV broadcast facilities for many organizations, including AT&T, Financial News Network, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, MTV, NBC, Rutgers University, and many others.
Dorrine Mendoza, Strategic Partnerships, News
Dorrine Mendoza is a member of the News Partnerships team at Facebook in New York City. In her role she works with digital journalists, assists with product management and efforts to support news gathering through the family of Facebook products.
Formerly she was the Senior Social Media Producer at CNN Digital. Duties included creating content for CNN.com and assisting with flagship social accounts. A central function of this position was to increase side-door traffic through social to the digital CNN properties through new platforms, strategy and creative storytelling. Business skills include testing and negotiating with social measurement and discovery platforms, building internal awareness of social opportunities and identifying trends to drive editorial decision-making. In both roles she has the opportunity to meet and collaborate with interesting, passionate and enthusiastic entrepreneurs!
Before coming to CNN she was an online content producer at the North County Times, where she did social media and online community management.
She has more than 10 years experience in print, broadcast and new media journalism, blending these disciplines to produce engaging and responsive coverage. Awards include an Associated Press Managing Editors award for reporting in 1998, a broadcast Emmy in 2007, and President’s Award for Innovation in in 2010. She led the North County Times initiative to Livestream their first event – the Escondido “bomb house” burning, and was the first North County Times journalist to live blog from a local trial. As a member of the Online News Association she is active in several groups focused on improving digital news delivery including #wjchat and the Facebook group, Social Journalism.
Mark Nienheuser, Missouri Press Service and 2015-2016 RJI Fellow
Mark Nienhueser, who has worked in sales and advertising for 25 years, is the advertising director for the Missouri Press Service, and was the project lead for the organization’s 2015-2016 RJI institutional fellowship.
Before coming to MPS in 2013, Nienhueser managed a team as vice president of sales for Service Noodle, a digital startup in Columbia. Previously, he worked as a senior account executive for Yellowbook. Nienhueser holds a marketing degree from the University of Central Missouri.
He resides in Jefferson City, Missouri, with his wife Paula and their two daughters. Nienhueser enjoys reading, playing golf and watching/listening to business shows like those on CNBC.

Walt Potter, retired newspaper publisher
Walt Potter is a third generation community newspaper publisher, growing up working on the Culpeper (Va.) Star-Exponent. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Walt worked for several daily newspapers including the Kansas City Times before returning to run the community paper his grandfather helped to found in Emporia, Va. Since establishing the Walter B. Potter Fund for Innovation in Local Journalism in 2010, Walt has worked with the Reynolds Journalism Institute to explore the future of community newspapers. Those efforts have included establishing the Potter Conferences— named for his publisher father — in 2011 and going on “Listening Tours“ the past two years to discover what the Potter Fund can do to help community papers.
Mike Wheeler, Westerly Partners, LLC and 2016-2017 RJI Fellow
Michael Wheeler is a managing partner of Westerly Partners, LLC, an investor advisory that provides strategic, financial and technology solutions to early stage companies focused on new media technology.
Wheeler has more than 40 years of senior management experience at NBC, CNBC, MTV, Showtime, The Financial News, Meredith Corporation, and CBS.
He is a member of the advisory committee of TV79, the government channel in Darien, Connecticut, and is also a board member for Library Ideas, a company that sells digital products to libraries. In addition, he serves on the board of advisers of Waywire, a video curation company, and ASC Services, a transcription provider.
He has been an adviser to the Reynolds Journalism Institute since its founding, and he is curator of MobileVideoDIY, a mobile-video resource of RJI.
Wheeler graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism with a bachelor’s degree in 1971 and a master’s degree in 2011.
He resides in Connecticut with his wife. He has three adult children. In his spare time, Wheeler enjoys teaching an ESL class and coaching a Special Olympics golf team.
His bucket list includes visiting every presidential library.
Nicholas Whitaker, Google
Before joining Google in 2010, Nicholas spent the prior decade producing, directing, editing, and shooting videos and still images for news, commercial, entertainment and advocacy media.
Nicholas was also a professor at Eugene Lang College - The New School for Liberal Arts, and Marymount Manhattan College, teaching courses in video production, new media and media theory.

Walt Potter has been visiting and talking with community publishers on “Listening Tours” since 2015, and he has found Facebook to be a major concern and sometimes a major ally to papers in rural areas. He’ll discuss those findings as well as provide early results from the Weekly Newspaper Website Project, a partnership between the Missouri Press Association and the Walter B. Potter Fund for Innovation in Local Journalism. WNWP is aimed at helping small papers build and improve their websites.
