Apple Watch app competition draws record student turnoutThere was a full house Tuesday night at the University of Missouri’s Reynolds Journalism Institute for the kickoff of the institute’s ninth annual student competition. Close to 100 students with backgrounds in journalism, computer science and business gathered to network and team up for the year-long competition. Their goal is to create applications for Apple’s wearable device, the Apple Watch. Mike McKean, director of the university’s Journalism Futures Lab, is one of the organizers of the competition. He said this year’s turnout was double what the competition’s opening session has drawn in past years. McKean attributed the larger crowd to the popularity of the Apple Watch platform.
