Helping reporters find an angle on climate adaptation

Climate change can be a complicated and challenging story to tell. But for journalists, one angle may make it easier: how your community can adapt to local climate risks.

To help reporters identify local adaptation stories, the Reporting Guide on Climate Adaptation now includes 10 quick-tip videos, each less than two-minutes-long. The videos offer advice on a range of adaptation angles, including human health, economics, sports and recreation, and natural environment.

“We want to help local reporters figure out how to tap into the adaptation story,” said Adam Glenn, the reporting guide’s executive producer, who is featured in the videos. “There are so many facets to this, from the variety of risks local communities face to the ways they have to prepare for the climate impacts headed their way.”

The video-tips library is the latest feature of the Reporting Guide, which was launched by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute in 2015. The guide includes a database of more than 250 annotated resources that help reporters track down story leads, as well as quick-read backgrounders on the adaptation issue.

Adaptation itself is an environmental story since ecosystems are being threatened.

“As we see more impacts like extreme weather, drought and sea-level rise, additional stories will emerge about risk, adaptation and resilience,” said Glenn. “These video tips are a fast-track way for reporters to get ready.”

If you have ideas for other angles on the adaptation story, share it with the site’s editors.
