Anthony De Rosa joins RJI Fellow David Cohn to lead news innovation

David CohnAnthony De RosaCirca, the San Francisco startup that is rethinking news for mobile, has named Anthony De Rosa as editor in chief.

Most recently, De Rosa has been Reuters’ social media editor, where he helped integrate the “ambient wire” that exists on social networks into Reuters platforms.

He trained the newsroom to find leads and sources on social media and used live blogs to deliver a constant flow of updates on breaking news, which led to receiving Reuters “Best Storytelling Innovation” award in 2011. He was also host of Reuters TV's "Tech Tonic" and a Reuters columnist.

“There’s a huge opportunity to present news in a way that’s made for mobile. Nobody is thinking about this more than Circa and I’m thrilled to help move that mission forward,” said De Rosa.

In less than a year since its launch in Oct. 2012, Circa has pioneered a new storytelling format designed for the mobile experience. The “follow” function in Circa allows readers to stay up to date on storylines as breaking news evolves over time. Circa is currently working towards its iPhone version 2.0 and an Android app to be released in Q3 2013.

“Anthony brings a shared vision to advance the traditional article format and the right blend of technology and journalism. Together I know we will serve mobile readers in an unmatched fashion,” said Director of News David Cohn, a 2010-2011 Reynolds Fellow.

De Rosa will be joining an editorial team of 12 editors spanning the globe from Beijing to San Francisco. He will begin his new role as editor in chief officially in mid-June.
